The 2CV Alaska Challenge

Newspaper and Television Coverage

Towards the end of June 1999, Rob and Andre found themselves in the Welsh border town of Hay-on-Wye, where, along with Sue and Sean Hackett and Colin, a local musician, they recorded The Ballad of Andre the Mountie, a song specially written for the occasion by Rob.

Colin's recording studio was in a converted pig shed up in the hills, where goats and chickens scrambled out of the way as the 2CV slid to a halt. The song was cut on the third take. If you've ever wondered what four drunks singing in a converted pig shed sound like, you can listen to this sound file...

WAV file size: 1.29 Mb.     Running time: 1 minute 58 seconds.

The Ballad of Andre the Mountie

Note: this is a large file and unless you have high speed Internet connection it will take a while to download. While you're waiting you could perhaps read the song lyrics shown on the rest of this page, or look at other parts of this site, or make yourself a cup of tea...

The Ballad of Andre the Mountie

A minimum of 4 people and a pianist is needed to perform this ballad...

(Ballad starts with a Canadian narrator)

'Across the windswept wastes of the Northwest Territories'

'Down the raging rivers of the Yukon'

'In the mighty forests of British Columbia'

'Can be found, Andre of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police...'

(followed by a deep baritone regular beat to introduce the ballad, joined by regular piano beat)

Bom Bom Bom, Ba Ba Ba Bom Bom Bom, Ba Ba Ba Bom Bom Bom...

(verses sung by the chorus in a fake North American accent)

'Andre the Mountie, he wrestles grizzly bears
And in his suit
He looks real cute
Cause the trousers ain't got flares'

Bom Bom Bom, Ba Ba Ba Bom Bom Bom, Ba Ba Ba Bom Bom Bom...

'My, you're looking real perdy today, Miss Becky'  (Andre speaking in a Canadian accent)

'Andre the Mountie, he drives a 2CV
In his upturned pram
Waving fists like ham
The sourdoughs' did all flee'

Bom Bom Bom, Ba Ba Ba Bom Bom Bom, Ba Ba Ba Bom Bom Bom...

'There was a real bad sourdough
Jim Skookum was his name
Andre fought him here, fought him there
And now Jim's not the same'

'Don't go getting stuck down anymore abandoned mineshafts, little Johnny'  (Andre speaking in a Canadian accent)

'Andre the Mountie, he's really tough and gritty
Fought the roughnecks
Only had safe sex
And cleaned up Dawson City'

'That's ok maam, anytime you need open heart surgery just give me a call'  (Andre speaking in a Canadian accent)

'Dawson City's now real pretty
And Andre's kinda witty
He climbs the larch and fir and spruce
And sings to the wolves and bears and moose

'Oh Andre, you're the one we're singing for'  (Canadian woman speaking)

'Andre the Mountie, he wrestles grizzly bears
And in his suit
He looks real cute
Cause the trousers... ain't got... no flares'

(ballad slows down and ends on this line with a piano tinkle)

'A Mountie always gets his man'  (Andre speaking in a Canadian accent)

END.
